2005 07 28 Truckee to Tonopah

This is a drive I have done many times. East on 80 to 50, 50 east through Fallon and then south on 839, 361, or 95. 839 is the "smallest" of these roads and there were a couple of things to check on the way to Tonopah, so that is what I did.

One of the places I wanted to look at is the National Mill and the "town" of Rawhide, but they are on private property and the canyon road in was gated, so I did not. I did get a phone number for the mine operator (Kennecott) and hope to get permission to go in sometime soon.

Just at the turn south from 50 onto 839 there is a large open range that is part of the Fallon Naval Air Station. There was actually some activity at this site when I went through. It looks like the Navy is bringing in more targets. The Navy calls this area Bravo 17.

You can see that lots of old vehicles and aircraft are being brought in and moved around. The last time I was through here (just a couple of months ago) none of this stuff in the foreground was there.

So 839 eventually goes to gravel, continues south and then east, joining 361 headed south to Luning. At Luning it was raining in the distance. This is always cool. The shot on the left is rain, the shot on the right is a very large swirl of dust. I think it is 200 feet across. (Sorry about the smudge in the images. I cleaned the camera after seeing these.)

From here I drove south to the junction of 361 and US95, and the town of Luning. I intend to shoot the old feed mill in Luning again, but not today.

I did stop in Coaldale and shoot some there. This is an abandoned truckstop - restaurant - garage, and I have shot here before. It's an interesting place.

That was about it for the day. It's a lot of driving.
